Smartphones, chips drive strong Q3 for Samsung

Samsung Electronics reported a 26% increase in third-quarter profits from the previous year as sales of cheaper smartphones in emerging markets helped overcome a slowing demand for high-end handsets due to rising competition and what the company termed "lingering macroeconomic issues." Samsung, which also cited soaring prices for memory chips for its success, said smartphone shipments grew in the "mid-10% range" even though sales of more expensive phones remained about even with the previous quarter.
