U.S. sees more initial unemployment claims than expected

First-time jobless claims declined by 12,000 last week, to 350,000, according to the Labor Department. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had predicted a median total of 340,000. The government shutdown and a backlog of claims in California made data analysis difficult, a Labor Department spokesman said.
