Analysts: Banks face uphill battle for earnings in 2008

While investment and diversified banks are unlikely to go through a repeat of the third-quarter pain, exemplified by Merrill Lynch's $8 billion write-down, they still face major challenges. Analysts predict that continued weakness in the housing sector is the biggest issue banks will have to overcome.
