Thoratec recalls batches of heart pump

Thoratec has recalled specific lots of HeartMate II -- a mechanical heart pump designed for use in patients awaiting transplants -- after the death of five patients. The move comes after some reports of wear-and-tear problems with an electrical wire prompted the replacement of the device. The company is calling on patients to have their implants tested.
