Risk factors for lentigo maligna melanoma and superficial spreading melanoma are different, according to a French study published in Archives of Dermatology. Having more solar lentigines was correlated with a higher risk for LMM, as was a history of skin cancer. Having more nevi, as well as more sunburns over a lifetime, was associated with a higher risk of SSM. "Our data support the hypothesis that LMM and SSM have distinct etiologies," the researchers wrote.
