Antioxidants lose "miracle cure" status

About one-third of Americans take antioxidant supplements such as vitamin C and beta carotene, largely following claims from the 1990s that these nutrients protect against cancer and heart disease. But follow-up research from previous tests show many of the claimed benefits didn't hold up after human testing, and the science community remains split on the benefits of antioxidants.
