Aviation officials discuss global regulation issues in Istanbul

Senior aviation officials from more than a dozen countries met in Istanbul over the weekend to discuss issues of international competition and ownership in the airline industry. Jeff Shane, the former U.S. Transportation Department official who chaired the meeting, noted that air traffic is governed by about 3,500 bilateral treaties dating as far back as World War II. Liberalizing those agreements would benefit both airlines and consumers, Shane said, by increasing competition and allowing capital to flow more freely.
