As the debate over paid sick leave has been overshadowed by the prospect of an outbreak of swine flu, NFIB argues that 75% of small businesses offer sick leave. Coming out of a recession, NFIB's Susan Eckerly says, this is the wrong time to impose such a mandate on small-business owners. "If they don't offer paid sick leave, it's probably because they can't afford it," she says. "Paying wages is sometimes all an employer can do."
