IT is the route to innovation, CEOs say

Almost two-thirds of CEOs believe that information technology is the most likely department to deliver meaningful innovation and to give the best return on investment for research-and-development spending, according to a Harris Interactive survey of Fortune 1000 executives. That's great, writes Joe McKendrick, as long as business leaders actually give their IT staff the time and resources they need. "IT departments are often so busy fighting fires and trying to keep the lights on with an overstretched staff that long-term efforts end up on back burners," he notes.
