Chemical firms demonstrate increased earnings in third quarter

Despite a slow pickup in demand, U.S. chemical manufacturers showed an earnings bump in the third quarter of 2013, an indication that the industry has adjusted to global instability. Diversified companies such as Dow Chemical and DuPont have turned to restructuring and internal strategies, such as shifting production to high-margin product lines. Meanwhile, the Chemical Activity Barometer of the American Chemistry Council suggests growing business confidence and consumer demand, said ACC Chief Economist Kevin Swift.
