Instructional overhaul helps Seattle elementary school boost scores

An overhaul in how educators teach is being credited with double-digit test-score leaps in reading and math at White Center Heights Elementary School, which has high rates of poverty and non-English speaking students. Instruction at the Seattle school includes an emphasis on critical thinking and finding meaning when reading, rather than simply decoding words, in fiction and nonfiction materials, plus ability-grouping and small-group interventions in math. The principal also paid teachers to read and discuss books on instructional theory.
