Nonprofit boards and their leaders operate in rapidly changing environments, so they need to hone a sense of "situational awareness," says Harvard Business School professor Herman B. "Dutch" Leonard. "It means that they need to rethink their approaches -- severing themselves from things that used to work, inventing things that will work now," he says.
