Nanotech thrills scientist, not his investors

Chad Mirkin, co-founder of the startup Nanosphere, is fascinated with the transformation that takes place when you miniaturize stuff. Gold, for instance, turns red or green. His company uses tiny bits of gold to test for genes and proteins involved in human disease. Despite an IPO that brought in more than $100 million, he hasn't been able to produce a profit. But he says the business challenge is making him a better scientist.
