Freeway in San Diego's Balboa Park undergoes major cleanup

The California Department of Transportation has started mowing and removing weeds and garbage from the overgrown landscape of a highway median on State Route 163 through Balboa Park in San Diego. The agency's action is part of a $100,000 maintenance project to improve the road's appearance after it became unkempt when Caltrans transformed its landscaping to resemble a meadow. The state is also enhancing an irrigation system along the median with new pipes and smart controls.
