Modeling tools help green builders

Building information modeling, or BIM, is potentially a powerful tool for green builders, say engineers and software developers. The computer technology gives architects and construction workers new ways to visualize and model building designs, allowing them to create detailed performance data and retrofit plans before breaking ground on a project. That means that BIM can serve as "a bridge between quick -- and often inaccurate -- benchmarks and detailed but costly audits," says Autodesk's Ani Deodhar.
