Some homeowners are considering no longer making their mortgage payments not because they can't afford to do so, but because the value of their home has declined. Strategic defaults remain highly controversial even as they become more popular. Experts warn that strategic defaults could exacerbate issues plaguing the housing market, and bankers maintain that homeowners should, when they are able, meet their obligations.
