Motorola Mobility boosts smartphone sales, but tablets slump

Motorola Mobility narrowed its third-quarter loss as smartphone sales increased 9.1% from a year ago to 4.8 million units, although sales of Xoom tablets fell to 100,000 units, about 75% off the second-quarter totals, the company disclosed Thursday. Mobile-device revenue rose 20% as overall sales grew 11% from last year's third quarter, a bit below analysts' estimates.
