Federally funded robotics teams bring cutting-edge research to light

The U.S. government is quietly supporting ways to make robots a more ubiquitous part of human life, but don't expect to see Rosie the Robot cleaning your house anytime soon -- what researchers have in mind is much more mundane, though no less exciting. Three years after its inception, the federally funded National Robotics Initiative is making headway on a range of pioneering "co-robot" technologies, such as an autonomous walking cane that maps the terrain for blind people and a robotic catheter than can enter a patient's bloodstream and fight heart conditions from the inside out.
