Ohio second-grade teacher Scott Koehler uses the "whole brain" method in which teachers engage students' senses with visual cues, sounds and gestures, among other things. While supporters of the technique say it helps students retain information and keeps them engaged in lessons, critics say it relies too heavily on memorization rather than higher-level thinking.
