Poor IRS verification processes lead to issuance of fraudulent tax refunds

A report of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration released Monday says that the Internal Revenue Service misses many fraudulent tax returns because it does not adequately verify income and withholding. As a result, many tax refunds are issued on returns that scored high enough on the IRS's Electronic Fraud Detection System to suggest the presence of fraud.
