New guidelines issued for evaluation, treatment of GERD

Guidelines for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease say weight loss should be recommended as a lifestyle change for some patients, while the preferred drug therapy is a proton pump inhibitor. The guidelines also say endoscopy generally should be the first diagnostic procedure for patients who have alarm symptoms -- such as an abdominal mass, weight loss or dysphagia.
