What does "locally grown" really mean?

Retailers across the U.S., including Wal-Mart and Whole Foods, are devoting more shelf space to products touted as "locally grown." However, retailer definitions vary, and one GMA official says outbreaks of food-borne illnesses are more likely to go undetected with the small quantities distributed in small areas.
