Auto-parts makers enter new manufacturing areas

Some makers of auto parts have expanded into new industries as part of an effort to diversify. Linamar Corp., for example, is building cordless electric lawn mowers, and it hopes to eventually produce power conversion units for a larger company that builds solar dishes. Other auto-parts companies are moving into aerospace, consumer products and mining equipment markets, observers say.
