Environmental groups win temporary ban against $1.7B power plant

Ruling that opposition groups had shown "a likelihood of irreparable harm to the environment," U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson on Wednesday issued a preliminary injunction that halted construction on a small parcel of land where Southwestern Electric Power Co. is building a $1.7 billion coal-fired power plant in southwest Arkansas. In siding with the Sierra Club, Audubon Arkansas and other environmental groups, Wilson noted, "More filling of wetlands, placement of the intake structure and spanning transmission lines pose a real threat of harm to the environment."
