Doctor calls for policies that give ICU patients greater mobility

ICU protocols should allow critically ill patients to have more mobility, and sedation should not be so deep that it prevents them from moving muscles, Dr. Gregory Schmidt of the University of Iowa told a panel at the American College of Chest Physicians conference. Schmidt said that a change in hospital culture may be needed to improve mobility for ICU patients and that added current treatments can lead to higher levels of diaphragmatic dysfunction and muscle weakness that can worsen outcomes.
