Not all affluent travelers are the same, study shows

New research from Ron Kurtz, who heads up the American Affluence Research Center, indicates that most of the top 10% of the wealthy are self-made millionaires -- not the same breed of affluence seen on television. The research sheds light on how the wealthy interact with the hotel industry, too -- "surprisingly few [of the top 10%] have experience with or are familiar with many luxury" hotel companies such as Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons, Kurtz says. "Only when you get to the top 1% of wealth do people really know these brands intimately," he said.
