Florida island struggles with hotel shortage after condo conversions

Longboat Key, Fla., is grappling with a shortage of hotels rooms and decreasing occupancy rates, caused largely by the conversion of many hotels to condos, such as one undergone by a 146-room Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites. The town is working on an ordinance that would allow hotels and resorts to apply for development expansion in an effort to replace the 250 rooms that have been lost since 2000.
