IRS says tax collectors must administer laws impartially

At the AICPA National Tax Conference this week, IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman said that while the agency and tax preparers should be mindful of how the economic downturn is hurting taxpayers, they must continue to administer the laws impartially. "We certainly don't want to see previously compliant taxpayers fall into noncompliance, but we are going to need to be sensitive to taxpayers who are under genuine economic duress," Shulman said.
