As communication becomes more Internet-focused, people are determining their self-worth by how many friends they have, which can lead to hurt feelings. "People use [online anonymity] as a cover and are more cruel than they would be otherwise," notes a psychologist. One study shows that people get hurt even when they know computers are the ones rejecting them.
