A week after a Northwest Airlines commercial jet overshot the runway because the pilots were distracted by their laptops, the Department of Transportation promised greater scrutiny of "distracted flying." Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood pledged to add cockpit distractions to a planned review of transportation safety issues such as text messaging. The Federal Aviation Administration bans pilot chatter and other distractions below 10,000 feet.
