Survey shows late referrals to palliative care for cancer patients

A survey of Canadian oncologists found one-third refer patients to palliative care or hospice when their cancer has spread and usually is incurable and another third wait until chemotherapy stops, which often is near the end of life, according to a report in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Study author Dr. Camilla Zimmermann said the bottom line is that "palliative care specialists and oncologists need to work more in collaboration" and referrals need to occur earlier.
