How development in Sri Lanka will affect the locals

Sri Lanka has become an attractive tourist destination in the past few years, write Macalester College geographer William G. Moseley and Vinod Malwatte, a graduate of the college. However, the government's approach to development, which would provide opportunities for international resort chains, could take a toll on fisheries and other environmental resources without doing much to help the locals, they warn. It might be more beneficial to adopt a strategy meant to promote community-based ecotourism, they write.
