Quants use Facebook to predict relationship trouble

A computer scientist from Cornell University and an engineer at Facebook are delving into the network of connections on the popular social media site in an attempt to shed light on what brings people together into romantic relationships -- and what eventually tears them apart. Using complex algorithms and 1.3 million randomly selected Facebook users, Jon Kleinberg and Lars Backstrom were able to predict more often than not the relationship status of a user based on the "dispersion" level of his or her online connections, and they drew a correlation between low dispersion levels and a couple's likeliness to break up.
