RD: IBS may have multiple triggers, including antibiotics

Irritable bowel syndrome may be linked to genetics and can have multiple triggers, such as hormones, certain foods, stress and antibiotic use that upsets the bacterial balance in the gut, registered dietitian Alexandra Anca says. Probiotics, consumed either through supplements or fermented foods, can help restore healthy gut bacteria following the use of antibiotics, Anca says.
