Study reports low adherence to arthritis, sciatica guidelines

A factorial experiment involving primary care physicians found variation in adherence to pain management recommendations for patients with osteoarthritis or sciatica, according to a study published in Arthritis Care & Research. Data from the New England Research Institutes showed less than one-third of doctors advised patients to exercise. Newer physicians were more likely to give advice on lifestyle changes and prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs but were less likely to order tests.
