Pumpkin-scented items like candles and pumpkin-flavored foods have become popular lately. However, the Fruit Growers Marketing Association says the overwhelming majority of the 1.6 billion pounds of pumpkins grown every year are for decoration, not nutrition. Still, companies are creating synthetic pumpkin scents from vanilla and nutmeg, citing the appeal of the traditional smell.
