Grocery carts as car substitutes

A growing number of San Jose, Calif., residents are using grocery carts to do everything from run errands to pick up their children from school. "It's a very expensive proposition when the carts walk away from the property,'' said Karen Brown, a senior vice president of the Food Marketing Institute. Fed up with retrieval fines and replacement fees, some retailers are now installing anti-theft systems that automatically lock cart wheels when they leave the store parking lot.
