Philadelphia mayor calls for more parent truant officers

Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street wants to increase the number of parent truancy officers from 100 to 500 to crack down on chronic truants, who, last year, constituted 80,000 of the district's 178,000 students. The new program would cost about $6 million in the district, which is facing a projected $73.3 million deficit.
