Successful leaders use their passion to shape their leadership style, says executive consultant Alaina Love. She examines the "passion archetype" of the leading U.S. presidential candidates to determine what sort of commander-in-chief they'd make. Sen. John McCain, she says, is an Altruist and a Builder. "Organizations need Builders -- as do countries -- in order to thrive and prosper, but holders of this archetype can be so expansionist in nature that they leave others behind," she says. Sen. Barack Obama's Conceiver passion, she says, can be a hindrance. But when he "operates from his Healer passion, Obama connects with voters on a visceral plane."
