The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to cut back on dredging harbors in the Great Lakes next year due to funding issues. The agency will dredge 12 harbors in 2009, down from 39 harbors in 2008. "We're only addressing the prime commercial harbors," said Wayne Schloop, chief of operations for the Detroit District. "[W]e still feel that we can maintain minimum functional channel requirements across the Great Lakes system," he noted.
