Questions arise over MetroPCS' ability to become a national force

Some analysts are skeptical about whether prepaid carrier MetroPCS Communications has the size and resources to take T-Mobile USA's place as a viable nationally competitive operator. AT&T and T-Mobile likely will have to divest assets to win court approval for their merger bid, and MetroPCS is seen as the front-runner for those properties, according to people close to the dealings. "They are a very niche player right now, with a specific brand image. They need to be more than that to be a credible nationwide player," said Michael Mahoney, senior managing director at Falcon Point Capital.
