Nutrition supplements may help reduce readmissions, study says

Researchers analyzed 11 years of data and linked oral nutrition supplements given to hospitalized Medicare patients to an 8.4% lower risk of readmission. The study, presented at the Society for Medical Decision Making annual meeting, found the supplements also were associated with shorter lengths of stay and lower costs. Researchers said such supplements could be a cost-effective tool for improving quality and avoiding readmission penalties.
