R&D funding for TB dropped last year

Spending for research and development of tuberculosis drugs was 4.6% lower in 2012 than in 2011, driven primarily by cuts in private donations, the Treatment Action Group said. The group worries that sequestration and other budget cuts will accelerate the trend at a time when TB drug resistance is growing. Sequestration cut CDC funds for a group that studies new drug regimens, and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci said sequestration makes increased NIAID funding unlikely.
