Researchers to review role of elementary-school math, science specialists

Researchers from Western Washington University will be exploring elementary-school science and math instructional models this fall. The study will consider whether specialists who focus on math or science are more effective at teaching those subjects than teachers who are responsible for teaching all subject areas. "Hopefully what will come out of this is an understanding of how to support teachers so they can really be effective," said Kimberly Markworth, WWU assistant professor of math education and principal investigator for the project.
