Study: ICU bedside sonography leads to fewer X-rays, CT scans

The Long Island Jewish Hospital ICU, which uses bedside sonography as standard care, logged fewer X-rays and CT scans than the North Shore University Hospital ICU, which uses conventional imaging, LIJ researchers reported at the CHEST meeting. The study team reviewed about 300 patient charts from each of the two New York hospitals and found the use of bedside sonography also may be less costly. "If you look at the data, there's no reason ultrasound shouldn't be deployed in the ICU," commented Dr. Lee Brown of the University of New Mexico.
