Young type 2 diabetes patients show more complications, earlier onset

Canadian researchers found youth with type 2 diabetes had a 47% increased odds of developing any complications compared with young type 1 diabetes patients, and they were more likely than those without diabetes to have vascular, renal and neurologic conditions. Younger type 2 diabetes patients were also more likely to experience earlier onset of complications than those with type 1 diabetes. The findings in Diabetes Care underscore the need for earlier, more intensive monitoring and treatment for complications in such patients, researchers said.
