Supermarkets expand, emphasize prepared food offerings

Supermarkets are playing up their prepared food options, and their nearly $5 billion in annual sales may pose more competition for traditional restaurants. A new Whole Foods location in Nashville, Tenn., devotes 15% of its store space to prepared foods, and GreenWise Markets, a spinoff of Publix Super Markets, has latched on to the organic and natural prepared foods trend as well.
