NCCI: Big workers' comp claims face more inflation, slower payouts

Cost inflation was higher and medical-services payouts were slower for large workers' compensation claims than for smaller ones, according to an NCCI Holdings report. Hospital services and prescription drugs represented 40% of payouts for claims higher than $100,000, the report said. Although 7.3% of total claims are within the range of $100,000 to $500,000, that claims group made up most of claim costs at 41.3%, as well as 59.7% of total prescription-drug costs and 43.4% of hospital-services costs, the report said.
