Gulf Coast petrochemical industry expands because of shale

Dow Chemical's planned ethylene production site at its Texas complex and Chevron Phillips Chemical's $5 billion project in the state are part of $15 billion in planned expansion along the Gulf Coast amid the nation's shale-gas boom. "We started watching a few years ago. We went from, 'Gosh, is this something real?' to convincing ourselves this is here to stay," said Mark Lashier, executive vice president of olefins and polyolefins at Chevron Phillips Chemical.
