Report exposes vulnerabilities of U.S. energy infrastructure

The U.S. electrical grid remains vulnerable to more than three dozen specific cyberattack scenarios, according to a report sponsored by the Energy Department, which finds the potential fallout of a network breach ranges from loss of revenue to loss of life. The 269-page report, "Electric Sector Failure Scenarios and Impact Analyses," identifies a number of scenarios under which the grid could face attack, including a disgruntled employee selling access to a foreign power, or a direct cyberattack from a rival state or hacker group.
